Smart or Tactful?

When we start learning how to handle objections we normally are taught a few smart responses to handling objections. For example it is said that one of the greatest life insurance agents, Ben Feldman, once went up to the secretary of a big businessman and asked her how valuable the businessman’s time was. Ben Feldman, it is said, talked the secretary to agree that the businessman was worth a few hundred dollars per minute. Ben Feldman took out $2500 and asked the secretary to give it to the business man to buy 5 minutes of his time. Excellent by any standards. In fact top class. La Jawaab! Only a ustad can do this.

Smart responses require a different mind set

To behave in this manner in the market requires a different mind set. The agent has to be super confident, should possess very good knowledge, have great public speaking skills, have a well rounded personality, amongst other qualities. These qualities can undoubtedly be acquired, can be learnt. To acquire these qualities, the agent should first successfully address hundreds of objections and build the confidence, knowledge, personality and public speaking skills. It takes time.

In the meanwhile?

We have to understand the way customers think and use tact to handle objections. The smart way has its advantages, but is not practical.
